Independent TD Mattie McGrath has said patient welfare at South Tipperary General Hospital is being undermined despite heroic efforts by its General Manager to ease the ongoing trolley crisis. Deputy McGrath made his comments following news that up to 20 patients were placed on trolleys in the Hospital’s Emergency Dept yesterday:
‘While there is no doubt that heroic efforts are being made by the general manager and front line staff, the reality is that all of these actions are taking place in a health system suffering from chronic dysfunction.
Nationally coordinated meetings of senior HSE staff has done nothing to address the fundamental problem of a lack of capacity.
This continues to be compounded by the shameful paralysis in the Fair Deal Scheme which is draining about four million euro a week from a health budget that is already under resourced.
As this crisis continues to roll on week after week it is becoming crystal clear in the publics mind that the ineptitude of the Department of Health and HSE’s arm chair generals are compounding this crisis into a national disgrace,’ concluded Deputy McGrath.
