“New School building for Gaelscoil Chluain Meala now in sight,” Mattie McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has warmly welcomed confirmation that a major building project which will result in a new school building for the Gaelscoil in Clonmel is currently at an advanced stage of architectural planning. Deputy McGrath was speaking after the Minister for Education, Joe McHugh, outlined the progress to him following a significant number of interventions to try and move the project forward:

“I am delighted that this excellent and long over-due project is finally progressing toward completion.

We must remember however that this project could have happened years ago if the Labour Party did not allow the decimation of the education budget when it was power.

As I understand it, the education budget spending in 2011 was €281m higher than the Labour Party’s in 2015, and this was despite the fact that there was an additional 44,000 students attending primary and secondary schools.

The facts also show that Labour and Deputy Alan Kelly was part of a government that cut education capital expenditure by 33% during that period.

Indeed in the four years from 2012-2016, when Labour had two government Ministers, they and Deputy Alan Kelly still managed to cut Guidance Counselling provision from 50% of schools as well as introducing cuts to the DEIS Scheme.

That being said, it is absolutely brilliant news that we are at this stage today, thanks in no small part to the dedication of the staff and the parents and all those who sought to advance the new school building” concluded Deputy McGrath.
