“New Archbishop will invigorate Church’s social teaching,” McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has warmly welcomed the installation of Archbishop Kieran O’Reilly as the new Bishop of Cashel & Emly. Deputy McGrath was speaking after the ceremony which he attended with representatives of the major political parties as well as the papal nuncio, Archbishop Charles Brown, and the Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin:

“The ceremony in the Cathedral of the Assumption in Thurles was a genuinely moving and dignified service.

Archbishop O’Reilly certainly gave all who were present a distinctive flavour of the kind of agenda he intends to pursue when he highlighted the horrors of human trafficking.

His commitment to preach the strong social justice dimension of the Church’s tradition is very welcome and will, I am sure, be warmly embraced by all those who are attempting to put in place structures and services aimed at combatting this insidious social evil.

As he embarks on what is sure to be a very challenging time for him, he will certainly take heart from the sheer goodwill and prayers of all those who were present for his consecration as the bishop of this ancient and wonderful diocese,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
