“Tipperary grandparents left in turmoil by Tusla heartlessness,” McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on the Minister for Children Katherine Zappone to demand immediate clarification from Tusla, The Child and Family Agency surrounding the forced removal of a young child from its Tipperary grandparents on the basis of their age. Deputy McGrath went on to say that the grandparents have been left traumatised and utterly bewildered at the course of events which has shocked the local tight knit community to its core:

“This case is one the saddest that has ever crossed my desk in all my many years as a public representative.

It represents a level of state over reach into the heart of a loving family that cannot be overestimated.

The grandparents, in their mid 60’s, had made this little 9 year old boy the heart and soul of their world since he came in to their care as a 4 year old.

He was cherished, well educated, well looked after; all of which was testified to by Consultants, his Principal, his local GP.

Yet none of this was good enough for Tusla who in its infinite wisdom decided it was best to take the child from its distraught grandparents and place him in another county without any effective means of communication.

This kind of action is a throwback to the kind of Ireland we all thought we were in the process of leaving behind.

It is absolutely outrageous the way Tusla have treated this honest hard working family.

To make matters worse Tusla have now informed us that they will be investigating themselves after a catalogue of poor case handling was criticised by the grandparents.

I will be demanding that Minister Zappone remove this function from Tusla given how obviously inappropriate it is for a state agency to investigate its own actions. .

This family and this child need swift intervention that is guided by common sense and compassion not by an incomprehensible adherence to bureaucratic box ticking exercises on Tusla’ part,” concluded Deputy McGrath.

  1. That’s disgraceful why would Tulsa take a child who is loved and cared for and doing so well with his grandparents and place him in care with strangers ? ? WAKE UP TULSA what in the name of God are ye found I’m disgusted to think ye can do this to a little boy and his grandparents

  2. Absolutely disgraceful a child within his own family taken away the effect it will have on the child and grandparents total madness and then we have other children at risk and are left in terrible situations who ever is responsible should be sacked immediately. And it beggers believe the people responsible for this terrible act are the ones to investigate. Is the world gone completely mad. The next thing we know they’ll be sending the children to American like in the past.

  3. This is ridiculous a child taken from a loving family into God knows what.. if it was law to remove children from a home where there was more than 40 year age difference between parent /carer half the children in the country would be removed including my own..

  4. Despicable act on behalf of this horrible state agency. This has the potential to cause untold issues for this little boy. Taking him away from his loving grandparents and his extended family and placing him with strangers. They disgust me. The grandparents should get him back and fast before there are any long term consequences to this little boys emotional well being. I am furiouu

  5. Dear Mr Mcgraths
I was a relative foster carer my niece and nephew from ages 5 months and 16 months. I was 49 and my partner was 48, we had the children for 3 1/2 years. At the same time I was caring for both my elderly parents. Both disabled with mental health issues. We experienced this ageism but fought hard and left Tusla with no other choice but to leave the children with us. We are also a same sex couple. I am trying to show the wholly subjective standard of these child care rules. Please fight for this child. BTW we are Nenagh based.

  6. Disgraceful conduct and should not be tolerated. Poor child will be forever traumatised and this goes on all the time. Time for it to STOP IMMEDIATELY. Let the child Home Today.

    • They should do their job probably ! Take the kid’s who are getting abused and are being I’ll treated , give this little kid back to his loving grandparents

  7. What kind of stupid people would take a child away from loving granparents, if that is the training they got to be social workers there is something wrong, they should lose their jobsface, what they did could have a lifelong effect on the child.

  8. Disgraceful this was an easy target not much paperwork to do because their was no problems they don’t investigate the ones they should or else their trying to keep themselves in a well paid job so sorry for the grandparents and the little boy who would be better off with his grandparents

  9. This is Unbelieveable if the child is being well careful for Why??? And Why did it take them so long to act and Why remove the child against the advice of their GP and School Principle who supported the Grandparents. Does this mean any child Living with Grandparents face the same dilemma. This is so wrong and not in the best interests of the child. Child Protection Agency???? Makes my blood boil!!!!

  10. Why fix somehing that was not broken. This poor child had a loving family, well cared for and this happens, disgraceful carry on. Tulsa it would be more in your line to go fix actual problems.Shame on you.

  11. Those Granparents are not the only Ones’s it happened to some Foster Parents are in their late 60s and are not Irish but Tusla will say they will make exceptions. The life some of them Children have in Foster care is like a life with ISIS.. 500 dead since 2005 54 since the Children’s referendum and no one held to account ? a lot of those deaths could have been prevented. Look at the Hiqa report on the Balldoyle Care home the hunger strikers of the 80s were treated better.
