Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called for the Dáil to be immediately recalled following the publication of the Fennelly Report into the circumstances surrounding the resignation of former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan. The Report has found that a visit by former Secretary General of the Department of Justice Brian Purcell to the home of Commissioner Callinan was the immediate catalyst for his retirement:
“This Report is the second major indictment of the Fine Gael/Labour coalition in less than a month.
The Eurostat judgement was a damning criticism of the economic and structural mismanagement at the heart of Irish Water; while Fennelly exposes the almost farcical ineptitude and underhanded manoeuvres operating at the highest levels of the justice system.
In the meantime we are supposed to accept the complete absence of any parliamentary debate on these urgent matters for almost anther month.
This is not acceptable by any standard.
The Dáil must be recalled to debate the gravity of these Reports.
“What possible justification can there be for allowing such damning Reports to be pushed to the margins while the Taoiseach and his Government plot a PR defensive whose only agenda will be to save Enda Kenny’s political reputation,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
