“Cahir Town deserves and needs a permanent Tourist Office facility,” Mattie McGrath
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on the Minister for Tourism Shane Ross to urgently clarify why Cahir Tourist Office is set to remain shut until the end of this month despite the fact that the 2017 Tipperary County Fleadh is taking place there until May 21st. Deputy McGrath was speaking as frustration grows within the town that the Tourist Office continues to operate to an uncertain annual schedule:
“Given the countless lost opportunities that may be occurring when the crowds visiting the town have no Office from which to inquire about local tourist amenities, it is vital that the Minister and Bord Fáilte address the issue.
Cahir has been subject to very shabby treatment since 2013 when Bord Failte reviewed their Tourist Office network.
It was again insulted in 2015 when it was inexplicably excluded from the Ancient East tourist initiative.
There can be no question about this; Cahir Town and District must be immediately prioritised given its significance as a historical Heritage Town and its potential to improve to the entire local economy.
It should not be seen as a stopping station on the way to or from places like Cashel or Lismore but should be valued and marketed in its own right.
To my mind it is a significant oversight not to have a full time local Tourist Office that can promote the town of Cahir and surrounding district properly.
If we are serious about supporting rural towns and regions then we need to ensure that small but important steps like this are taken,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
